Description

Hot Tub Serum Total Maintenance is a weekly water care product that keeps your spa clean from the inside out, and this 2 Liter bottle is the value size — roughly 24 weekly doses, or four to six months of supply for most spas. This EPA-registered formula — the well-known "purple liquid" — targets the one place ordinary chemicals can't reach: the biofilm that builds up inside your plumbing and jets. Added once a week alongside your sanitizer, it prevents that buildup from ever taking hold.

Biofilm is the hidden villain of hot tub care. It's a slimy bacterial layer that forms inside spa pipes, and it's notoriously hard to remove once established — it keeps re-contaminating your water, driving cloudy water, odors, and constant sanitizer demand no matter how carefully you dose. Total Maintenance stops that cycle: it keeps the plumbing clean so contaminants can't hide and multiply, and it makes your existing sanitizer noticeably more effective by dispersing bacteria so the sanitizer can reach them.

The result is water that stays crystal clear, soft, and fresh-smelling with less effort — and because your sanitizer works better, you typically end up using less of your other chemicals overall. It also helps guard against white water mold and smooths out pH swings.

Pro Tip: The 2 Liter size is the one to choose if you're on an auto-ship or dealer program. Serum Watercare's Lifetime Jet Warranty is tied to regular weekly use of the 2 Liter bottles through an authorized dealer's auto-ship program — so buying this size and using it consistently is what keeps that jet coverage in force.

What's in the Box
  • 1 x Hot Tub Serum Total Maintenance Watercare (2 Liter bottle; approximately 24 weekly doses)
Key Features
  • Value size — 2 Liters provides about 24 weekly doses (4–6 months for most spas)
  • Prevents biofilm — stops bacterial buildup inside plumbing and jets before it starts
  • Boosts your sanitizer — disperses bacteria so chlorine or bromine works more effectively
  • Reduces chemical use — a more effective sanitizer means you use less of everything else
  • Softer, clearer water — keeps water clean, soft, and fresh-smelling week to week
  • Works with every system — compatible with chlorine, bromine, salt, biguanide, and mineral
How It Works

The active ingredient is an EPA-registered biocide (a quaternary ammonium compound). Circulated through your spa each week, it works deep in the plumbing lines to keep biofilm from establishing on the interior surfaces — the pipes, pump, and jets you can't see or scrub. By denying bacteria that protected foothold, it keeps the whole system cleaner between water changes.

At the same time, it makes your primary sanitizer more efficient: by dispersing bacteria in the water, it lets your chlorine or bromine reach and neutralize microbes more easily, so your sanitizer isn't fighting an uphill battle. That's why owners find their sanitizer lasts longer and their water clears faster. It's important to understand this is a supplement to your sanitizer, not a sanitizer itself — it helps your sanitizer do its job rather than replacing it.

Pro Tip: For a truly fresh start, pair Total Maintenance with a plumbing purge. If your spa has never been deep-cleaned (or you're refilling), run the brand's Total Cleanse purge before you drain, then keep the clean plumbing that way with weekly Total Maintenance. Purge to remove existing biofilm, maintain to keep it from ever coming back.

Directions for Use

Always add chemicals to water, never water to chemicals. Balance your hot tub water to industry-standard levels — total alkalinity 80–140 ppm, pH 7.4–7.6, and calcium hardness 150–350 ppm — and always maintain an EPA-approved sanitizer at the recommended level.

  1. With the circulation running, add 1 fl oz (30 mL) per 100 gallons of spa water.
  2. Repeat every 7 days, trying to add it on the same day each week. Do not over-dose.
  3. small amount of foaming after application is normal. If excessive foaming occurs, reduce the dosage accordingly.
  4. Wait about 2 hours before entering the water after application.
  5. Test your water weekly with a reliable kit or strips, and rinse your filter cartridge(s) regularly for best performance.

If water becomes cloudy, foamy, discolored, or develops an odor, shock the water and increase your sanitizer level; if poor conditions persist, perform a full cleanout with the brand's Total Cleanse.

Pro Tip: Pick a "Serum day" and stick to it. This product rewards consistency — a weekly dose on the same day (say, every Sunday) keeps biofilm from ever getting a foothold. Tie it to something you already do weekly, like testing your water or your regular shock, and it becomes an effortless habit that keeps the plumbing spotless.

Compatibility

Hot Tub Serum Total Maintenance is compatible with all sanitizing systems — chlorine, bromine, salt/SWG, biguanide, and mineral systems (including The Frog®, @ease®, and Nature2®). It's designed to layer on top of whatever sanitizer you already use.

It's also unusually forgiving chemically: it's not affected by pH outside the 7.2–7.6 range, by cyanuric acid (CYA), or by common oxidizers, so it keeps working even when your water chemistry drifts. It works alongside your balancers (keep TA, pH, and calcium hardness in range) and a reliable test kit or strips. As part of a routine, it's the maintenance follow-up to the brand's Total Cleanse purge. Add chemicals one at a time, rinsing and drying your measuring cup between products.

Hot Tub Serum® Brand FAQs

What is Hot Tub Serum, and how is it different from other spa chemicals?

Hot Tub Serum is an EPA-registered water care line built around one idea most spa chemicals ignore: cleaning and protecting the inside of your spa's plumbing. Its products prevent and remove biofilm— the bacterial sludge that builds up in pipes and jets and keeps re-contaminating your water. Made by Serum Watercare, the line is registered with the EPA in all 50 states.

Does Hot Tub Serum replace my sanitizer?

No. Hot Tub Serum works along side your sanitizer, not instead of it. You still need to maintain an EPA-approved sanitizer (chlorine, bromine, salt, or a mineral system) at proper levels. Serum keeps your plumbing clean and makes your sanitizer more effective — so most owners end up using less of their other chemicals — but a sanitizer is always required.

What is biofilm, and why does it matter in a hot tub?

Biofilm is a slimy layer of bacteria that forms inside spa plumbing where you can't see or reach it. It protects the bacteria within it from your sanitizer, which is why an untreated spa can stay cloudy, smelly, or sanitizer-hungry no matter how carefully you dose. Because it hides in the pipes, it keeps coming back until it's addressed at the source — which is exactly what Hot Tub Serum targets.

How does the Hot Tub Serum Total Clean System work?

It's a simple two-step regimen. First,Total Cleanse is added before a drain-and-refill to purge existing biofilm and gunk out of the plumbing. Then, once the spa is refilled,Total Maintenance is added weekly to keep that biofilm from ever coming back. Purge to clean, maintain to keep it clean.

Is Hot Tub Serum compatible with my sanitizer system?

Yes. Hot Tub Serum is compatible with all sanitizing systems — chlorine, bromine, salt water generators, biguanide, and mineral systems such as The Frog®, @ease®, and Nature2®. It's also unaffected by pH swings, cyanuric acid, and common oxidizers, so it keeps working even when your water chemistry drifts.

Is there a warranty benefit to using Hot Tub Serum?

Serum Watercare offers a Lifetime Jet Warranty for owners who use Total Maintenance weekly through an authorized dealer's auto-ship program. Because jet failure is often caused by scale and water-chemistry buildup that Serum helps prevent, the program covers replacement of removable jet inserts that fail due to water chemistry. About Hot Tub Serum®

Hot Tub Serum is a water care brand from Serum Watercare, built on a simple insight the rest of the industry overlooked: the biggest threat to clean hot tub water isn't in the water you can see — it's the biofilm hidden inside your plumbing. Where conventional chemicals only treat the water in the shell, Serum's EPA-registered formulas clean and protect the pipes, jets, and internal surfaces where bacterial sludge takes hold.

The result is the Total Clean System: a purge product (Total Cleanse) that scrubs existing biofilm out of the plumbing before a drain-and-refill, and a weekly maintenance product (Total Maintenance) that keeps it from ever returning. Registered with the EPA in all 50 states and backed by a first-of-its-kind Lifetime Jet Warranty for regular users, Hot Tub Serum is designed to make spa care simpler while protecting the equipment you've invested in — for water that stays clear, soft, and fresh with less work.
