BioGuard Balance Pak 300 is a granular calcium chloride hardness increaser that raises calcium hardness to protect your pool's surfaces and equipment. It's the third step in the balancing sequence — after total alkalinity and pH — and it's the one most pool owners never test until something has already gone wrong.

Low calcium hardness is a quiet, expensive problem. Water is naturally aggressive toward calcium, and when there isn't enough of it dissolved in the water, the water goes looking for some. It pulls calcium directly out of whatever it's touching — etching plaster, dissolving grout, corroding metal equipment and heater components, and in vinyl pools contributing to liner wrinkling. None of that announces itself. It happens gradually across a season or two, and by the time a plaster surface feels rough underfoot the damage is already done.

That roughness compounds the problem. Etched plaster gives algae far more surface to anchor to, makes brushing and vacuuming less effective, and is genuinely uncomfortable for swimmers. Pool owners who find themselves fighting persistent algae on an older plaster pool are often fighting a calcium problem they never diagnosed.

How It Works

The active ingredient is calcium chloride. When it dissolves it separates into calcium ions and chloride ions, and the calcium ions are what your test kit reads as calcium hardness. The correction is direct — you're adding the exact substance being measured.

Understanding why low calcium causes damage explains why this matters more than most people assume. Water tends toward saturation with respect to calcium carbonate. When a pool's calcium level sits below what the water can hold, the water is chemically undersaturated — and undersaturated water actively dissolves calcium carbonate from any source it can reach. In a plaster or gunite pool, the surface itself is a calcium carbonate source. The water pulls calcium out of the finish, leaving it pitted, rough, and progressively weaker. In any pool, the same aggressive water accelerates corrosion of metal components.

That's why calcium hardness is not optional even in a vinyl or fiberglass pool. There's no plaster to protect, but there's still a heater, still metal fittings, still pump components. Aggressive water attacks all of them, and it contributes to liner distortion as well.

The relationship runs both directions. Too much calcium is also a problem: oversaturated water precipitates calcium carbonate out of solution as scale, which builds on surfaces, clouds the water, and coats heater elements where it directly reduces efficiency. The target range exists because both extremes cause damage — the goal is water that neither dissolves calcium nor deposits it.

One property drives the handling instructions. Calcium chloride dissolving in water is strongly exothermic: it releases heat. In a pool, that heat disperses instantly through thousands of gallons and is irrelevant. In a bucket, it's enough to make the container hot to the touch and to cause splashing. That's the reason BioGuard specifies broadcasting this product directly rather than pre-dissolving it, and it's the opposite of the guidance for most other granular pool chemicals.

Worth knowing: calcium hardness does not go down on its own. It doesn't evaporate, break down, or get consumed. It only decreases through dilution — draining and replacing water. So it's better to under-correct and retest than to overshoot, since fixing an overshoot means a partial drain and refill.

Pro Tip: Know your fill water before you dose. Calcium hardness comes into the pool with every gallon you add, and the starting point varies enormously by source. Much of Idaho and the Intermountain West sits on hard water — many municipal supplies here run well above 200 ppm straight from the tap, which means a pool filled locally may need little or no calcium added at all. Soft or softened water is the opposite: a pool topped off from a water softener will run chronically low and need regular correction. Test your fill water once, write the number down, and you'll know for every future refill whether you're starting high, low, or right where you want to be. If you're on well water, test for metals at the same time.

  4. Calculate the correction: subtract your current reading from your target, then divide by 10 to get the pounds needed per 10,000 gallons.

Application

  1. With the pump and filter running, add the product directly to the pool by scattering it over the water surface.
  2. Do not pre-dissolve this treatment — heat is generated when the product contacts water.
  3. Use a surface-compatible brush to brush any undissolved granules off pool surfaces.
  4. For large corrections, split the total into multiple additions with about 2 hours of circulation between doses rather than adding everything at once.
  5. Allow the water to circulate fully, then retest before adding any more.

Pro Tip: Under-correct on purpose, then retest. Calcium hardness is a one-way adjustment — nothing removes it from the water except draining and refilling with softer water. There's no "calcium reducer" to buy if you overshoot. So if your reading is 120 ppm and you're targeting 200, resist the urge to add the full 8 lbs per 10,000 gallons in one go. Add most of it, circulate, retest, and finish the correction from an accurate second reading. Test kits have real margin for error at these levels, and the cost of stopping short is one more small dose. The cost of overshooting is a partial drain and a water bill.

Can I mix BioGuard products with chemicals from other brands?

Basic balancers are chemically generic and generally interchangeable — alkalinity increaser is sodium bicarbonate no matter whose label is on the bucket. The real risk sits withsanitizer programs and specialty additives. Never introduce chlorine or bromine into a biguanide pool; the two chemistries destroy each other and produce cloudy water, gummy filter fouling, and a collapsed sanitizer residual. Also avoid stacking algaecides and clarifiers from different brands, since overlapping actives can cause foaming or staining. And regardless of brand, never combine two products in the same bucket, scoop, or feeder — always add them separately with circulation running between.

What is SilkGuard Technology?

SilkGuard® is a conditioning technology built into BioGuard's chlorinating tabs and sticks.
