The active ingredient, sodium carbonate — commonly called soda ash — is a strongly alkaline compound. When it dissolves, it neutralizes the acidity in the water, raising pH and lifting total alkalinity as well. The goal is to keep spa water in the 7.2–7.8 range, where it's non-corrosive, comfortable on skin and eyes, and where your sanitizer does its best work.

That strong pH effect is what distinguishes it from a bicarbonate-based alkalinity increaser: soda ash is the efficient choice when pH is the reading that's low. If both pH and alkalinity have dropped, Spa Up will move them both in the right direction at once.

Pro Tip: Balance alkalinity before pH, then fine-tune. Total alkalinity is the buffer that keeps pH stable, so if pH keeps falling no matter how much you add, low alkalinity is usually the underlying cause. Get alkalinity into the 80–120 ppm range first, then use Spa Up to set pH exactly — you'll use less product and the result will hold.

Test your water first with Sirona test strips. Use when pH tests below 7.2, aiming for a target range of 7.2–7.8. Add directly to the spa water with the circulation system running. Always follow the package label for exact dosing.

1. Test the water to confirm pH is below 7.2.
2. With the circulation running, broadcast the recommended amount over the surface of the water — as a general guide, about 1 ounce per 500 gallons; see the label for the dose matched to your spa size and current reading.
3. Let the water circulate, then retest.
4. If pH is still below 7.2, repeat until it sits between 7.2 and 7.8.

Pro Tip: Add it in small doses and work upward. Soda ash acts strongly and quickly, so it's easy to overshoot into high-pH territory — which brings its own problems with scale and cloudy water, and means correcting back with Spa Down.
