Description

BioGuard Scale Inhibitor is a sequestrant — it keeps calcium and dissolved metals locked in solution so they can't precipitate onto your pool surfaces, plumbing, filter, or heater. It's the product that prevents two expensive problems before they start: scale buildup from high calcium and staining from iron, copper, and manganese.

Both problems work the same way. Minerals dissolved in water are invisible and harmless. The trouble begins when conditions shift — a rise in pH, a temperature increase, a chlorine addition — and those minerals come out of solution and deposit onto whatever surface they land on. Calcium becomes the white, crusty scale that builds on tile and roughens plaster. Iron and copper become brown, green, or black staining that brushing won't touch.

The most expensive place either one shows up is the heater. Scale on a heat exchanger insulates it, forcing longer run times, driving up gas or electric costs, and eventually causing failure. A sequestrant is dramatically cheaper than a heat exchanger.

This formulation has been reformulated and is four times more effective than the previous version, and it keeps working three to four weeks after application — so a monthly maintenance dose actually covers the month. It won't affect pH, so protecting your equipment doesn't create a balancing job.

It also handles fresh metal stains. Staining less than five days old can often be lifted with a treatment dose and daily brushing. Stains that have aged into the surface are a different and much harder problem — covered below.

Pro Tip: Add this before you chlorinate a fresh fill, not after you see a stain. Chlorine is a powerful oxidizer, and raising the chlorine level is exactly what knocks dissolved iron and copper out of solution and onto your pool surface. That's why stains so often appear right after opening or right after a shock treatment — the metal was there the whole time, waiting for something to precipitate it. If you're filling from a well, or topping off substantially, dose the sequestrant first and let it circulate before adding sanitizer. Five minutes of sequence discipline prevents a stain that costs a full treatment protocol to remove.

How It Works

Scale Inhibitor is a sequestrant, sometimes called a chelating agent. Its molecules bind to dissolved minerals — calcium, iron, copper, manganese — and hold onto them, keeping them locked in solution and chemically unavailable to precipitate.

Understanding the problem it prevents makes the value obvious. Water can only hold so much dissolved mineral, and that limit shifts constantly with pH, temperature, and total dissolved solids. When water becomes oversaturated, the excess mineral comes out of solution and deposits on the nearest surface.

For calcium, that deposit is scale — calcium carbonate. It forms fastest where water is warmest and most turbulent, which is exactly why heaters, heat exchangers, and salt cell plates scale first. Scale on a heat exchanger acts as insulation: the heater works harder for the same result, run times climb, energy costs rise, and eventually the unit fails. On surfaces it produces the white crust at the tile line and the rough texture that makes plaster uncomfortable and gives algae more to hold onto.

For metals, the trigger is usually oxidation rather than saturation. Dissolved iron, copper, and manganese are invisible in water. Chlorine — a powerful oxidizer — converts them into insoluble oxides that fall out of solution and bond to pool surfaces as stains. This is why staining so reliably appears right after opening or right after a shock: the metal was present all along, and the chlorine addition precipitated it.

A sequestrant intervenes ahead of both mechanisms. By binding the mineral, it prevents the reaction that would drop it out of solution. The mineral stays dissolved and harmless, circulating with the water rather than depositing on it.

That mechanism also explains the fresh stain removal capability. A stain less than five days old hasn't fully bonded to the surface, so a sequestrant can pull the metal back into solution where it belongs. Once a stain has aged and set into the finish, the bond is too strong — which is why aged stains need a dedicated stain remover with reducing chemistry, or in severe cases draining and acid washing.

And it explains the 3–4 week working life. Sequestrant molecules are gradually consumed and removed through filtration, splash-out, and dilution, so protection fades over time. That's what makes this a monthly maintenance product rather than a one-time treatment.

Pro Tip: Five days is the line that decides your whole approach to a metal stain. Under five days old, this product plus daily brushing will often lift it — a straightforward treatment. Beyond that, the metal has bonded into the surface and a sequestrant can't reach it; you're looking at a dedicated stain remover and a multi-step protocol, or for white plaster pools, draining and acid washing. That's a large difference in cost and effort, so the moment you notice discoloration, act. Take a photo when you first see it so you know how long you've actually got, and check for metals in your fill water while you're at it.

Initial Treatment

  1. Backwash the filter according to your equipment manufacturer's directions.
  2. With the pump running, add 1 quart of this product per 10,000 gallons of water, pouring the product directly into the pool.
  3. Continue to run the pump for 24 to 48 hours after this addition.

Maintenance Treatment

  1. Apply 16 fl oz per 10,000 gallons of pool water once a month.
  2. Add the product directly to the pool water with the pump on.
  3. Maintenance doses should be used for pools in areas where excessive hardness or metals cause constant scale and staining problems.
  4. Stay on the monthly schedule — the residual works for three to four weeks, so a skipped month leaves the pool unprotected.

Removal of Fresh Stains

  1. Confirm the staining is less than five days old. Many fresh metallic stains can be removed by this product.
  2. Add this product at a rate of 1 quart per 10,000 gallons of water.
  3. Apply directly to the pool in the area of the stains.
  4. Brush the stained area daily for 3 to 5 days.
  5. Large metal stains may require repeat treatments.
  6. Where metal stains have aged into the pool's surface, draining and acid washing is recommended for white plaster pools only. Consult your BioGuard dealer regarding this matter.

Best Practice at Fill and Opening

  • Test for metals and calcium hardness in your fill water before you start
  • Add the sequestrant and let it circulate before raising the chlorine level
  • Repeat after any substantial top-off or partial refill
  • Keep pH in range, since low pH accelerates corrosion of metal equipment and adds metals to the water
  • Address the source where you can — a corroding heater or fitting keeps feeding metal into the pool no matter how much sequestrant you add

Pro Tip: A sequestrant manages the symptom, not the source — find out where the metal is coming from. Well water is the obvious culprit, but a corroding heater core, corroding metal fittings, or a copper-based algaecide will all feed metal into the pool continuously, and you'll be dosing forever without fixing anything. Chronically low pH is a common hidden cause: acidic water actively dissolves copper out of heat exchangers and plumbing, which means the stain you keep treating is literally your heater dissolving. Keep pH at 7.4–7.6, get a full water test that includes metals, and if the number keeps climbing between treatments, something in the equipment pad is the source.

Which BioGuard program is right for my pool?

Can I mix BioGuard products with chemicals from other brands?

Basic balancers are chemically generic and generally interchangeable — alkalinity increaser is sodium bicarbonate no matter whose label is on the bucket. The real risk sits withsanitizer programs and specialty additives. Never introduce chlorine or bromine into a biguanide pool; the two chemistries destroy each other and produce cloudy water, gummy filter fouling, and a collapsed sanitizer residual. Also avoid stacking algaecides and clarifiers from different brands, since overlapping actives can cause foaming or staining. And regardless of brand, never combine two products in the same bucket, scoop, or feeder — always add them separately with circulation running between.

What is SilkGuard Technology?

SilkGuard® is a conditioning technology built into BioGuard's chlorinating tabs and sticks. It softens the feel of the water against skin and helps protect pool surfaces and equipment from scale formation, so the sanitizer is doing two jobs at once. SilkGuard Complete® products also carrySunShield® Technology, which shields free chlorine from ultraviolet breakdown.
