BioGuard Mineral Springs Stain and Scale protects the most expensive component in a salt pool: the chlorine generator cell. It's one of two products needed to convert an ordinary salt pool into a Mineral Springs pool, and it's applied once a season at start-up.

Scale is the defining maintenance problem of salt systems, and it hits the generator cell hardest. The cell works by passing current through saltwater across metal plates — and those plates are exactly where dissolved calcium and minerals precipitate first. A scaled cell produces less chlorine for the same run time, forces the system to work harder, and eventually stops performing altogether. Replacement cells are among the costliest parts in the equipment pad.

The reason salt pools scale so readily comes down to two things happening at once. The cell generates heat and turbulence right at the plate surface, which is where minerals come out of solution most easily. How It Works

Stain and Scale works as a sequestrant. Its molecules bind to dissolved calcium and metal ions and hold them in solution, keeping them chemically unavailable to precipitate onto surfaces.

The problem it prevents is worth understanding, because salt pools face it more acutely than conventionally chlorinated pools do.

Water can only hold so much dissolved mineral, and that limit shifts with pH, temperature, and turbulence. When water becomes oversaturated, the excess comes out of solution and deposits on the nearest surface as scale — the white, crusty buildup that forms at the waterline, roughens plaster, and coats equipment.

And the reaction at the plates produces a locally elevated pH. The system compensates by running longer, which uses more electricity and accelerates wear. Eventually output falls below what the pool needs and the cell requires cleaning or replacement.

There's a second factor specific to salt systems: they push pH upward continuously. The cell aerates the water as it operates, driving carbon dioxide out, and that raises pH. Higher pH means calcium is substantially more likely to precipitate. So a salt pool is fighting a rising-pH trend and a scale-favorable cell environment at the same time.

A sequestrant intervenes ahead of the deposition. By binding calcium and minerals, it prevents the reaction that would drop them onto the plates — so they stay dissolved and circulate harmlessly instead.

One honest limitation: a sequestrant manages minerals, it doesn't remove them. The calcium is still in your water, held in a non-depositing form. Sequestrant molecules are gradually consumed and lost through filtration, splash-out, and dilution, which is why the treatment is seasonal rather than permanent — and why the weekly Renewal product exists alongside it.

Pro Tip: Keep pH in range and this product works much harder for you. Salt generators drive pH upward continuously as the cell aerates the water, and high pH is precisely what makes calcium precipitate. A sequestrant fighting a pool sitting at 8.0 is doing far more work than one in a pool held at 7.4–7.6. Test pH at least weekly on a salt pool — more often than you would on a tablet-fed pool — and correct it with a pH reducer when it climbs. Some salt pool owners also add borates, which buffer against that upward drift far more stubbornly than alkalinity alone and reduce how often the acid comes out.

Can I mix BioGuard products with chemicals from other brands?

Never introduce chlorine or bromine into a biguanide pool; the two chemistries destroy each other and produce cloudy water, gummy filter fouling, and a collapsed sanitizer residual. Also avoid stacking algaecides and clarifiers from different brands, since overlapping actives can cause foaming or staining. And regardless of brand, never combine two products in the same bucket, scoop, or feeder — always add them separately with circulation running between.
