BioGuard Instant Stabilizer 100 is a liquid chlorine stabilizer that goes to work immediately — and the difference between it and granular stabilizer is bigger than the format suggests.

Conventional granular stabilizer is cyanuric acid, and it behaves like one. It's strongly acidic, it dissolves slowly — commonly four to seven days — and much of that time it sits undissolved in the filter or against pool surfaces. That's why granular stabilizer comes with a list of handling rules: no backwashing for 48 hours, don't let it rest on the finish, wait days before retesting. Applied carelessly, it can damage a pool surface or the circulation system.

Instant Stabilizer 100 is a different chemistry entirely. The active ingredient is monosodium cyanurate — a salt rather than an acid, with a pool-friendly pH. It won't damage pool surfaces or equipment, it dissolves on contact, and it protects chlorine immediately instead of over the following week.

The job it does is the same one every outdoor pool needs. Ultraviolet light is the single largest drain on free chlorine, and unprotected chlorine can lose a substantial share of its strength in a matter of hours on a bright day. How It Works

The active ingredient is monosodium cyanurate monohydrate at 35%. Once in the water it provides cyanurate, which is what a cyanuric acid test measures and what does the stabilizing.

Free chlorine in water exists largely as hypochlorous acid, and hypochlorous acid is readily broken apart by ultraviolet light. In direct summer sun an unstabilized pool can lose a large fraction of its free chlorine within hours — not consumed by bacteria or organic waste, simply destroyed by sunlight before it does any work.

Cyanurate forms a weak, reversible bond with free chlorine. Bonded chlorine is shielded from UV and survives in the water; as unbonded chlorine gets consumed sanitizing the pool, the bond releases more back into active service. The result is a protected reservoir that's still available to work.

Where this product differs from granular stabilizer is form and pH. Granular stabilizer is cyanuric acid — strongly acidic, and slow to dissolve because the crystal structure resists going into solution. Four to seven days is normal, during which much of it sits in the filter or on the pool floor. Concentrated acidic material resting against a surface is what creates the damage risk, and it's why granular products carry restrictions on backwashing and surface contact.

Monosodium cyanurate is the sodium salt of that same chemistry. It carries a pool-friendly pH rather than an acidic one, and it dissolves readily. Same stabilizing effect, delivered immediately, without the handling constraints.

The tradeoff is identical to any stabilizer, and it's the important part. Bonded chlorine is less immediately reactive than free chlorine. At correct levels that hardly matters. As cyanuric acid climbs, a progressively larger share of your chlorine is tied up at any moment, and sanitizing power drops even though the test reads the same. That's chlorine lock — a pool showing a textbook 3 ppm that still goes cloudy or grows algae.

And cyanuric acid is permanent. It doesn't evaporate, doesn't degrade in sunlight, isn't consumed by chlorine, and passes straight through any filter. The level only rises — from this product and from every trichlor tablet, dichlor granule, and dichlor shock. The only way down is dilution.

Pro Tip: If your pool "stopped holding chlorine" in late summer, test cyanuric acid before buying more shock. This is the most common misdiagnosis in pool care. A pool fed by trichlor tablets accumulates stabilizer steadily all season, and once it climbs well past the target range, free chlorine becomes progressively less effective at the same reading. The pool looks properly chlorinated on a strip and behaves like it isn't — cloudy water, algae taking hold, sanitizer that seems to vanish. More chlorine doesn't fix it, because the chlorine isn't missing; it's tied up. A partial drain and refill is the only real correction, and it's cheaper than a month of shocking a pool that can't respond.

  4. Confirm the circulation pump is running.

Application

  1. Shake well.
  2. With the circulation pump running, slowly pour Instant Stabilizer 100 into the pool skimmer, or directly into the pool while walking around the edge.
  3. Brush to rapidly disperse the product.
  4. Rinse the container with pool water and shake to ensure all product is removed from the bottom of the bottle.
  5. Pour the remaining rinse solution into the skimmer or pool.
  6. Keep the pump running to circulate and distribute the product.
  7. Retest cyanuric acid to confirm the level before adding any more.

Why the Rinse Step Matters

Steps 4 and 5 aren't housekeeping. Concentrated liquid stabilizer settles, and a meaningful amount stays in the bottom of the bottle after pouring. Rinsing and adding that back means you get the full dose you paid for — and it means your dose calculation actually matches what reached the pool, so your follow-up test reflects reality.

Pro Tip: Under-dose deliberately and retest, because stabilizer is a one-way adjustment. There is no product that removes cyanuric acid — the only correction for an overshoot is draining and refilling with fresh water. If your reading is 10 ppm and you're targeting 40, that's 30 ppm of correction, or roughly 120 fl oz per 10,000 gallons. Add most of it, circulate, and retest before finishing the job. Never introduce chlorine or bromine into a biguanide pool; the two chemistries destroy each other and produce cloudy water, gummy filter fouling, and a collapsed sanitizer residual. Also avoid stacking algaecides and clarifiers from different brands, since overlapping actives can cause foaming or staining. And regardless of brand, never combine two products in the same bucket, scoop, or feeder — always add them separately with circulation running between.
