Description

BioGuard Chem-Out neutralizes excess chlorine, bromine, or hydrogen peroxide in pool water. It's the product that gets a pool swimmable again after a shock treatment or an accidental over-chlorination, instead of waiting days for the level to fall on its own.

Free chlorine above roughly 4 ppm isn't safe to swim in, and after a heavy superchlorination a pool can sit well above that for a considerable stretch — especially with a stabilizer level that's slowing UV breakdown, cool water, or an overcast forecast. Chem-Out removes the excess directly, taking a pool from unusable to swimmable in a short window rather than a long wait.

It has three other jobs that matter as much as the obvious one:

  • Converting a pool to SoftSwim. Biguanide sanitizer and chlorine destroy each other, so any chlorine or bromine residual has to be neutralized before a conversion. Chem-Out is how that's done.
  • Metal stain removal. The stain protocol requires dropping sanitizer below 1 ppm before treating, because chlorine works directly against the reducing chemistry that lifts the stain.
  • Hydrogen peroxide removal, relevant to pools that have used peroxide-based treatments.

It also won't affect pH, so lowering your sanitizer doesn't create a balancing problem on top of it. Fast-dissolving granules with a measuring cup included, and dosing keyed to how much chlorine you actually need to remove.

Pro Tip: Wait before you reach for this after a shock treatment. Give superchlorination a full 8 to 12 hours to oxidize the wastes and chloramines it was applied to destroy — that's the entire point of shocking, and neutralizing early cuts the treatment short. You'll have burned the cost of the shock without getting the benefit, and the chloramines that were making eyes sting will still be there. Shock in the evening, let it work overnight, test in the morning, and use Chem-Out only if the level is still too high to swim.

How It Works

Chem-Out is a reducing agent — chemically the opposite of the oxidizers that make up most of a pool routine.

Chlorine, bromine, and hydrogen peroxide all work by oxidation: they destroy contaminants by stripping electrons from them. A reducing agent does the reverse. It donates electrons to the oxidizer, converting it into an inactive form that no longer sanitizes and no longer registers as free chlorine on a test.

The reaction is immediate and it's a genuine chemical conversion, not a dilution or a masking effect. The chlorine is neutralized and it isn't coming back. That's why the dose has to be calculated rather than estimated — every ounce you add removes a specific amount of sanitizer, and there's no partial or gradual effect to fall back on.

It also explains why overshooting is the risk to manage. Add too much and you don't just reach your target — you strip the pool's sanitizer residual to zero and leave it unprotected. An unsanitized pool in warm weather starts growing things quickly, and you'll be adding chlorine back within hours.

The pH neutrality is a real convenience. Some methods of lowering chlorine move pH substantially, which means correcting one number and then correcting another. This reaction doesn't shift the balance, so nothing else needs adjusting afterward.

The same chemistry is what makes it the tool for a SoftSwim conversion. Biguanide sanitizer is readily oxidized, so introducing it into water that still holds a chlorine residual destroys it on contact. The residual has to be brought to zero first, and a reducing agent is the only way to do that on a schedule.

And it's why the metal stain protocol calls for chlorine below 1 ppm before treating. Stain removers work by chemical reduction, converting deposited metal oxide back into a soluble form. Chlorine, being an oxidizer, works directly against that — leaving it in the water means the two chemistries cancel each other and the treatment fails.

Pro Tip: Dilute your test sample when chlorine is off the scale, and don't guess. After a heavy shock, free chlorine can easily read above the top of a test kit's color comparator, and "somewhere above 10" isn't a number you can dose against. BioGuard's method: mix one cup of pool water with one cup of tap water, stir gently, test the diluted sample, then multiply the result by 2 to get your actual level. Subtract 3 ppm from that figure and you have exactly how much chlorine to remove. Five minutes with a measuring cup is the difference between a correct dose and either wasting product or stripping your pool to zero.

Step 1 — Let the Shock Finish

Allow at least 8 to 12 hours for a superchlorination treatment to oxidize wastes and chloramines from the pool water before neutralizing. Then add Chem-Out to lower the free chlorine reading to the required 3.0 ppm level before swimming.

Step 2 — Measure Your Free Chlorine

Before adding any product to the pool, measure the free chlorine in the water. This must be done to determine the correct dosage.

  1. Test using either a BioGuard water test kit or BioGuard 4-way test strips. Test the superchlorinated pool as you normally would.
  2. If the free chlorine reading is above the highest level shown on the test's color comparator — or to get a more definitive result at high chlorine levels — dilute the water sample.
  3. To dilute: using a measuring cup, add one cup of pool water to one cup of tap water. Gently stir.
  4. Test the diluted water using the same kit or strips.
  5. Multiply the diluted reading by 2. That is the free chlorine level of your pool.

Step 3 — Calculate and Apply

  1. Subtract 3 ppm from the free chlorine level of the pool. The resulting number is the amount of free chlorine you must remove before it is safe to swim.
  2. Use the chart on the bottle and the measuring cup supplied to calculate the required dose.
  3. Add this product directly to the pool, scattering around the edge of the pool.
  4. Keep the pump on and the water circulating.
  5. Do not add treatment through the skimmer.

Step 4 — Retest Before Swimming

  1. Allow the water to circulate fully after application.
  2. Retest free chlorine and confirm it is in the safe swimming range before anyone enters.
  3. If the level is still high, calculate a second dose from the new reading rather than estimating.
  4. If you overshot and the residual is at or near zero, add sanitizer to reestablish a proper level before the pool sits unprotected.

Storage and Handling

  • Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from moisture
  • Keep the container tightly closed and the measuring cup with it
  • Store separately from chlorine, bromine, and other oxidizers — this is a reducing agent and the two are chemical opposites

Pro Tip: Under-dose deliberately, then retest. It is far easier to remove another ppm of chlorine than to recover from stripping the pool to zero — an unsanitized pool in warm weather can start growing algae within hours, and you'll be buying shock to fix what a neutralizer just undid. If your calculation lands near the edge of a dose increment, take the smaller one, circulate, and retest. And if you have a salt chlorine generator, turn it off before treating, or it will keep producing chlorine while you're trying to remove it.

Which BioGuard program is right for my pool?

Can I mix BioGuard products with chemicals from other brands?

Basic balancers are chemically generic and generally interchangeable — alkalinity increaser is sodium bicarbonate no matter whose label is on the bucket. The real risk sits withsanitizer programs and specialty additives. Never introduce chlorine or bromine into a biguanide pool; the two chemistries destroy each other and produce cloudy water, gummy filter fouling, and a collapsed sanitizer residual. Also avoid stacking algaecides and clarifiers from different brands, since overlapping actives can cause foaming or staining. And regardless of brand, never combine two products in the same bucket, scoop, or feeder — always add them separately with circulation running between.

What is SilkGuard Technology?

SilkGuard® is a conditioning technology built into BioGuard's chlorinating tabs and sticks. It softens the feel of the water against skin and helps protect pool surfaces and equipment from scale formation, so the sanitizer is doing two jobs at once. SilkGuard Complete® products also carrySunShield® Technology, which shields free chlorine from ultraviolet breakdown.
