Description

The Tri-X 73178 replacement filter is a factory-original ceramic cartridge filter for Hot Spring Spas, made by Watkins Mfg. Its ceramic pleats are engineered to filter twice the water per minute of a standard paper filter — delivering noticeably clearer water, less frequent cleaning, and an estimated five-year lifespan.

Your filter is the hardest-working component in your spa. It's what pulls body oils, lotions, hair, and fine debris out of the water before they cloud it, feed bacteria, or coat your plumbing. A tired or undersized filter forces everything else to compensate: the water goes dull, you burn through more chemicals, and your pump and heater work harder against restricted flow. Getting the filter right is one of the highest-leverage things a spa owner can do.

That's where the Tri-X design stands apart from the common polyester "paper" filter. Its rigid ceramic media captures twice as much from the water while allowing higher flow to the jet pumps, and it's durable enough to be cleaned with high-pressure water — or simply run through your dishwasher. Better clarity, less maintenance, and years of service from a single cartridge.

Pro Tip: Think in cost-per-year, not cost-per-filter. A Tri-X costs more up front than a polyester cartridge, but a paper filter is typically replaced every year or so while a properly maintained Tri-X can run about five. Spread across its service life, the ceramic filter is usually the less expensive choice — and you get better water the entire time.

Key Features
  • 2x filtration efficiency — ceramic pleats filter twice the water per minute of a standard paper filter
  • Clearer water — captures more oils, debris, and fine particles for visibly better clarity
  • Estimated 5-year lifespan — with proper maintenance, it far outlasts polyester cartridges
  • Dishwasher safe — clean it indoors with no detergent, no more hosing filters off in the cold
  • Higher flow to the jets — the ceramic design supports strong water flow for the jet pumps
  • Factory original — genuine Watkins Mfg part, built for Hot Spring spas
How It Works

Instead of the folded polyester fabric used in a common "paper" filter, the Tri-X uses a rigid ceramic-fiber media formed into pleats. That structure does two things at once: it presents a finer, more effective filtering surface — capturing about twice as much from the water — while still allowing water to pass through freely, so your jet pumps get the flow they need.

The rigid media is also what makes the filter so easy to live with. Because the ceramic doesn't tear or collapse the way fabric pleats can, it stands up to high-pressure water and to dishwasher cleaning, and it holds its shape and performance for years. That combination of finer filtration, strong flow, and durability is why one Tri-X can serve for an estimated five years.

Pro Tip: Don't substitute paper filters in a spa designed for Tri-X. The filtration and jet pump systems in Tri-X-equipped Hot Spring spas are engineered specifically around the ceramic filter's flow characteristics — running basic polyester filters instead can put the jet pump system under strain. If you own a Tri-X spa, stay with Tri-X.

Directions for Use

Installation

  1. Turn off power to the spa at the breaker before servicing the filter compartment.
  2. Remove the filter lid or cover, then lift out the old cartridge.
  3. Seat the new Tri-X cartridge in the same orientation, making sure it's fully and squarely in place.
  4. Replace the lid, restore power, and run the circulation to confirm normal flow.

Routine Cleaning

  1. Every two weeks: rinse the filter thoroughly with a hose or high-pressure water, working between the pleats.
  2. Periodically: deep clean with a FreshWater filter cleaner to dissolve the oils and buildup a rinse can't remove.
  3. Dishwasher method: place the filter in the dishwasher with no detergent, using the rinse cycle only and no drying cycle.

Pro Tip: Keep a spare cartridge in rotation. A filter cleans best when it dries fully between uses, and a deep clean takes time. With a second Tri-X on hand, you can drop the fresh one in immediately and clean the other at your convenience — your spa never runs on a dirty filter, and both cartridges last longer.

The Tri-X ceramic cartridge fits all Hot Spring spa models from 1990 to current, including the Highlife series (Grandee, Envoy, Vanguard, Prodigy, Sovereign, and others). It also fits 1998–2002 Hot Spot models and all Solana X, RX, SX, and TX models.

It serves as a direct replacement for the common polyester (paper) filters, including the 71825 fabric cartridge. Hot Spring® Brand FAQs

Who makes Hot Spring spas?

Hot Spring spas are made by Watkins Wellness, a company with more than45 years of hydrotherapy expertise and part of the Masco family of brands. Hot Spring is one of the most recognized and highest rated names in hot tubs, known for legendary massage, easy water care, and leading energy efficiency.

What are the Hot Spring spa collections?

Hot Spring offers four collections. The Highlife® Collection is the flagship line, with premium design, specialized jets, smart water care, and 100% filtration. The Limelight® Collection features advanced design with targeted jets. The Hot Spot® Collection delivers the essential Hot Spring experience with comfortable jets and a salt system. The Freeflow® Collection offers Plug-N-Play ease with gentle jets. Hot Spring also makes the Vigor™cold plunge.

Which filter does my Hot Spring spa use?

It depends on your model and year. Many Hot Spring spas use the Tri-X ceramic cartridge filter, marked P/N 0969601 on the top, while others use polyester (paper) cartridges or the larger filters found in Limelight models. The most reliable way to confirm is to check your owner's manual, or pull your current filter and read the part number printed on it. Also check how many filters your spa takes, since some models use more than one.

How often should I clean and replace my spa filter?

As a general rule, rinse every two weeks and deep clean periodically with a dedicated filter cleaner to dissolve the oils a rinse can't remove. Replacement intervals depend on the type: polyester cartridges are typically replaced aboutonce a year, while a Tri-X ceramic filter can last up to five years with proper maintenance. Replace any filter sooner if the pleats are torn, flattened, or permanently discolored.

Are genuine Hot Spring filters worth it compared to aftermarket?

Factory-original filters are built to the exact dimensions and flow characteristics your spa's filtration and jet pump systems were engineered around. An aftermarket filter that fits the opening may still restrict flow or filter less effectively, which can make your pump work harder and leave your water less clear. Genuine filters are the safest choice for protecting both water quality and equipment.

What makes water care easier on a Hot Spring spa?

Hot Spring builds water care into the spa itself. Many models use the FreshWater® IQ salt water system, which monitors water hourly and provides clear instructions with Precision Dosing to help keep water balanced with less effort. Combined with effective filtration and a regular cleaning routine, that's what keeps Hot Spring water clear and comfortable with minimal hands-on maintenance.
