In a front-load skim filter, the cartridge sits behind an access cover on the wall of the tub with its open bottom seated over the suction fitting. When you switch the jets on, the pump draws water from inside the cartridge's hollow core, dropping the pressure there below that of the surrounding bath water. That difference pulls water inward through the pleated media from every direction, and filtered water continues through the core into the pump and out through the jets.

Because the top cap is sealed, all flow is committed to a single downward path through the bottom opening. There is no second outlet and no route for water to reach the pump without passing through the media. In a jetted bath this matters more than it might in a spa: the pump is drawing a high volume through a compact housing for short bursts, and anything that bypasses the filter goes directly into plumbing that you cannot easily inspect or clean.

The cartridge captures hair, skin cells, lint, and the fine particulate that comes off skin and hair during a bath. What it also captures — and what defines its working life — is the film of soap, oil, and product residue that coats the fibers. Unlike granular debris, which sits in the media and rinses out, a surfactant film wraps the individual polyester strands and progressively narrows the spaces between them. That is why a bath filter can look almost clean and still restrict flow noticeably.

The 100-pleat count is deliberately moderate. On a cartridge destined to meet soap and bath oil, widely spaced pleats are worth more than a high fold count, because a tap or hose can actually reach the base of each fold and flush residue out before it sets. A more densely pleated cartridge would offer more surface area on paper and be considerably harder to keep genuinely clean in this application.

Pro Tip: Pull the string loop straight out, slowly and steadily — never jerk it. The loop is there to solve a real problem, since a front-load housing gives you no room to grip the cartridge itself, but it is also the one part of this filter that can fail outright rather than gradually wearing. A cartridge that has gone a long time between changes can grip its housing surprisingly hard, and a sharp yank is what breaks the string. If it does break, you are left trying to extract a snug cartridge from a shallow recess with nothing to hold onto. If it resists, work it gently side to side to break the seal first, then draw it out. Check the loop for fraying every time you remove the cartridge.

Installation

1. Make sure the tub is fully drained and the jets are switched off before opening the filter access cover.
2. Remove the front access cover on the tub wall.
3. Grip the string loop on the old cartridge and draw it straight out, slowly. If it resists, work it gently side to side rather than pulling harder.
4. Reach in and clear away any hair or debris that has collected in the housing recess and around the suction fitting.
5. Seat the new cartridge with the open end down over the suction fitting and the string loop facing out toward you.
6. Press it in until it seats fully and sits square without rocking.
7. Confirm the string loop is accessible and not tucked behind the cartridge, then replace the access cover.
8. Fill the tub and run the jets for a minute, checking that jet pressure is normal.

Routine Cleaning

• After any bath using bubble bath, bath oil, bath bombs, or bath salts: Remove the cartridge that same day and rinse it under a warm tap. Fresh residue rinses away easily; set residue does not.
• Every 2 to 4 weeks under normal use: Rinse thoroughly with a hose or shower head, spraying downward into the pleats at an angle and rotating the cartridge so every fold gets direct attention.
• Every 3 months, or sooner with heavy product use: Soak in a dedicated filter cleaning solution to dissolve the soap film and body oils that rinsing alone cannot lift. Rinse thoroughly afterward — cleaner left in the pleats causes persistent foaming the next time you fill the tub, which in a bath is both obvious and unwelcome.
• Let it dry between deep cleanings if you can. A fully dried cartridge releases trapped residue far more easily on the next rinse. Keeping a second cartridge to rotate makes this practical and roughly doubles the useful life of both.

Important Cautions

• Do not jerk or yank the string loop. Steady, straight pressure only.
• Do not use a pressure washer. High-pressure spray tears media fibers and destroys pleat geometry, often without visible damage.
• Do not clean with dish soap, laundry detergent, or household cleaners. This is doubly important on a bath filter — you are trying to remove surfactant residue, and adding more defeats the purpose and guarantees foaming.
• Do not run the jets without a cartridge installed. Hair and debris drawn directly into the pump can cause damage costing far more than a filter.
• Do not install the cartridge upside down. The closed top must face outward with the loop accessible; inverted, the sealed cap blocks the suction fitting.
• Do not boil, bleach, or machine-wash the cartridge.

When to Replace

Replace the cartridge when you see torn or separated media, cracked or deformed end caps, a frayed, stretched, or broken string loop, a soft or collapsing core, pleats that have permanently lost their shape, discoloration that no longer responds to a soak, or a noticeable drop in jet pressure that cleaning no longer restores. A damaged string loop warrants replacement even when the media still looks good, simply because a cartridge you cannot get back out is a problem you do not want to discover later. Replacement intervals here depend far more on how often the tub is used and how much bath product goes into it than on the calendar — a lightly used bath may go well beyond a year, while frequent use with oils and bubble bath can shorten that considerably.
