The Unicel 6CH-945 is a 45 square foot top-load replacement cartridge for Jacuzzi J-460 spas built from 2006 onward, replacing OEM part number 6540-498. It is the cartridge for Jacuzzi's ProClear II filtration on the J-400 Series — a tall, slender filter standing 13-1/2" in a 6" body, with a semi-circular handle on the closed top and a 2" coarse SAE thread on the bottom.
That thread is where careful buyers pay attention. SAE is a different standard from MPT pipe thread — coarser, with fewer and deeper turns, running straight down a cylinder of constant diameter rather than tapering. But knowing you have an SAE thread is only half the answer, because SAE cartridges come in more than one size. A 1-1/2" SAE and a 2" SAE will not interchange, and both are common on spa filters that otherwise look remarkably alike.
What the threaded design buys you is the elimination of bypass. On a drop-in cartridge the seal depends on the filter seating flat against a surface, and any gap lets unfiltered water slip past the media — the reason a spa can run cloudy with a brand-new filter installed. On a threaded top-load, the cartridge is the connection. Water cannot reach the pump without passing through the media, because the only route into the suction line runs through the inside of the cartridge.
The 143 pleats across 13-1/2" of height are notably widely spaced for the capacity — Unicel reached 45 square feet here through length rather than by crowding the folds. That is worth having. Wide pleat gaps let a garden hose actually reach the base of each fold, so debris rinses out rather than compacting, and the cartridge recovers closer to full performance after each cleaning. Media is 3 oz Reemay polyester over a solid molded core with chemical-resistant end caps. Made in the USA by Meissner Manufacturing, with more than 45 years behind the Unicel name.
Pro Tip — "SAE" alone does not tell you enough. There are two common SAE sizes on spa cartridges, and the ones that use them can look nearly identical: same 6" diameter, same semi-circular handle, same 45 square feet of media. The differences are the thread size and the length. This cartridge is 2" SAE and 13-1/2" long. The other common variant is 1-1/2" SAE and roughly 8-1/4" long — five inches shorter, which is obvious with a tape measure and invisible in a photograph. Check both numbers on your old cartridge before ordering. If you only verify the thread standard and not the size, you have done half the job.

How long does a Unicel filter last?
