Description

The Unicel 6CH-50 is a 50 square foot top-load replacement spa filter cartridge, standing 13-7/16" tall in a 6" body with a semi-circular handle on the closed top and a 1-1/2" male pipe thread on the bottom. It carries 158 pleats of 3 oz Reemay polyester and threads directly onto the suction fitting in the floor of the filter well.

That threaded connection is what makes a top-load design worth having. On a drop-in cartridge the seal depends on the filter seating flat against a surface, and any gap lets unfiltered water slip past the media — the reason a spa can run cloudy with a brand-new filter installed. Here the cartridge is the connection. Water cannot reach the pump without passing through the media, because the only route into the suction line runs through the inside of the cartridge.

Fifty square feet across a 13-7/16" body means the pleats can stay generously spaced rather than crowded. That matters more than a raw pleat count suggests. Widely spaced folds let a garden hose actually reach the base of each pleat, so debris rinses out rather than compacting into the media. A cartridge that genuinely cleans back toward new performance is worth more across its service life than one with a higher pleat count that never quite recovers after the first few washes.

The one thing to get right before ordering is the thread. Spa cartridges of this general size and shape are built with several different bottom connections — different thread sizes, and different thread standards entirely — and they are not interchangeable. The 1-1/2" MPT on this cartridge is a tapered pipe thread, which behaves differently from the straight SAE threads used on some otherwise very similar filters.

Pro Tip — on this cartridge, do not rely on the length. That is unusual advice, and here is why it applies. There is another 6" top-load cartridge in common circulation that is 13-1/2" long against this one's 13-7/16". That is a difference of one sixteenth of an inch — comfortably inside the margin of error for anyone measuring a wet cartridge while leaning into a spa cabinet. Both have the same 6" diameter and the same semi-circular handle. What separates them is the bottom connection: this cartridge is 1-1/2" MPT, the other is 2" SAE. Different size and different standard. Check the thread, not the tape measure.

How It Works

The cartridge threads onto a suction fitting at the base of the filter well and stands upright. When the pump runs, it draws water from inside the core, creating lower pressure there than in the surrounding spa water. That difference pulls water inward through the pleated media from every direction at once, across the full 6" circumference and the entire 13-7/16" height. Filtered water travels down the hollow core, through the threaded fitting, and into the suction plumbing.

An MPT connection is a tapered pipe thread, and the taper is the whole mechanism. The fitting is very slightly narrower at the tip than at the base, so as you turn the cartridge on, the threads wedge progressively tighter against each other. That interference is what forms the seal — the thread flanks themselves are doing the sealing work, which is why a properly made pipe thread does not need a gasket.

The consequence is worth understanding before you install it. A tapered thread gives you no natural stopping point. It does not bottom out against a shoulder and refuse to go further. It simply keeps wedging tighter for as long as you keep turning, and the resistance builds so gradually that it feels like progress right up until the molded plastic splits. Almost every cracked end cap on a threaded spa cartridge comes from exactly this.

Particles are captured in the depth of the polyester fibers rather than merely on the surface, which is why a cartridge that still looks reasonably clean can already be substantially restricted — most of the accumulated material sits inside the fabric, not visibly on it. Declining jet pressure is the most reliable early signal that a cleaning is overdue.

Pro Tip: Stop at snug. On a tapered pipe thread, "tighter" always feels available, because there is no shoulder to bottom out against — the threads just keep wedging. Turn until you meet firm resistance, then stop turning. Do not give it "one more quarter turn to be sure," and never put a tool anywhere near it. Overtightening either cracks the end cap outright or seizes the cartridge so completely that the next person to change it has to destroy it to get it out. If you are worried about it working loose, do not be: a tapered thread under suction load tightens rather than backs off.

Directions for Use

Installation

  1. Turn the spa off at the breaker before opening the filter compartment. Never unthread a cartridge with the pump running.
  2. Remove the filter lid, grip the semi-circular handle, and turn counterclockwise to unthread the old cartridge.
  3. Pause with the cartridge still in the well and let it drain for a few seconds before lifting it clear. A loaded 50 sq ft cartridge holds a lot of water and debris, and pulling it straight out dumps that load back into the well.
  4. Inspect the suction fitting. Clear away hair, grit, and debris, and check that the threads are clean and undamaged.
  5. Lower the new cartridge in and seat it onto the fitting. Turn counterclockwise first until you feel the threads drop into alignment, then reverse and turn clockwise to thread it on. This prevents cross-threading.
  6. Tighten by hand only until you meet firm resistance, then stop. Do not use a wrench, pliers, or any tool.
  7. Confirm the cartridge stands straight and does not rock or lean. A leaning cartridge means it is cross-threaded or not fully seated — back it out and start again.
  8. Replace the lid, restore power at the breaker, and run a full circulation cycle. Verify normal jet pressure and flow.

Routine Cleaning

  • Every 2 to 4 weeks: Unthread and rinse with a garden hose. Spray downward into the pleats at an angle, rotating the cartridge steadily so the full circumference and all 13-7/16" of height get direct attention. The generous pleat spacing works in your favour here — a hose can genuinely reach the base of each fold.
  • Every 3 months: Deep-soak in a dedicated spa filter cleaning solution to dissolve the body oils, lotion residue, and mineral scale that no amount of rinsing will remove. Rinse thoroughly afterward — cleaner left in the media is a common and entirely preventable cause of foaming.
  • At every drain and refill: Deep-clean the cartridge before it goes back into fresh water. Installing a loaded filter into a freshly filled spa gives back most of the benefit of the refill.
  • Inspect the threads at every cleaning. Run a fingertip over them. Rounded, chipped, or deformed threads mean the cartridge can no longer seal reliably.
  • Rotate two cartridges if you can: A spare lets you install the clean one immediately while the other dries completely. A fully dried cartridge releases trapped debris far more easily on the next rinse, and rotating roughly doubles the useful life of both.

Important Cautions

  • Do not overtighten. A tapered pipe thread never bottoms out, so it will keep turning until something breaks. Snug is correct.
  • Do not attempt to thread this cartridge into an SAE fitting or a 2" MPT fitting. Forcing a mismatched thread damages both the cartridge and the fitting.
  • Do not use a pressure washer. High-pressure spray tears media fibers and destroys pleat geometry, often without visible damage, and torn media passes unfiltered water straight through.
  • Do not use a wrench, pliers, or any tool on the threaded connection, and do not lever against the handle. If it will not turn, work it gently back and forth rather than applying force.
  • Do not use thread sealant or plumber's tape. The cartridge is designed to seal on the thread interference alone, and sealant makes future removal considerably harder.
  • Do not clean with dish soap, laundry detergent, or household cleaners. These leave residues that foam persistently and are very difficult to rinse out.
  • Do not run the spa without a cartridge threaded on. On a top-load system this leaves the suction line completely open, and debris pulled directly into the pump can cause damage costing far more than a cartridge.
  • Do not boil, bleach, or machine-wash the cartridge.

When to Replace

Replace the cartridge when you see torn or separated media, cracked end caps, damaged or stripped threads on the bottom connection, a cracked or loose handle, a soft or collapsing core, pleats that have permanently lost their shape, staining that no longer responds to a deep soak, or a persistent drop in flow that thorough cleaning no longer restores. On a threaded cartridge, thread damage is an immediate replacement regardless of how good the media still looks — a tapered thread relies on clean, undamaged flanks to seal, and a cartridge that cannot seal defeats the purpose of a top-load design. On a cartridge this tall, also watch for a visible bow or lean when it is stood upright, which indicates the core has begun to soften. Most spa owners under typical use replace every 12 to 18 months.

Telling MPT and SAE Apart by Eye

Hold your old cartridge up and look at the thread profile from the side. Fine, numerous, and slightly tapered means MPT.
