The Unicel 4CH-35 is a 35 square foot top-load replacement spa filter cartridge — a fundamentally different design from the drop-in cartridges most spa owners picture. Instead of two open ends and a filter well that the cartridge simply sits inside, this one has a 1-1/2" male pipe thread molded into the bottom end cap and a molded cone handle on top. It screws directly onto the suction fitting in the floor of the filter compartment.
That threaded connection is the entire point, and it is worth understanding before you buy. On a drop-in cartridge, the seal between the filter and the plumbing depends on the cartridge seating flat against a surface. Gaps, warping, or a slightly misaligned cartridge let unfiltered water sneak past the media — a phenomenon known as bypass, and the reason a spa can run cloudy with a brand-new filter installed. On a threaded top-load design, the cartridge is the connection. Water physically cannot reach the pump without passing through the media, because the only path into the suction line runs through the inside of the cartridge.
The handle solves the other half of the problem. Threaded cartridges have to be unscrewed, and a cartridge that has been submerged in 100-degree water for a month is slick, loaded with oils, and unpleasant to grip. The molded cone gives you a dry, clean handhold to twist against — no wrestling the pleats, no squeezing debris deeper into the media on the way out.
Underneath, this is standard Unicel construction: 145 uniform pleats of 3 oz Reemay polyester media wrapped around a solid injection-molded core, with chemical-resistant end caps. The tall, narrow geometry — 4-5/8" across but a full 16" long — is how 35 square feet of surface area fits into a compartment barely wider than a coffee mug. Made in the USA by Meissner Manufacturing, with more than 45 years behind the Unicel name.
Pro Tip: Thread it on hand-tight only. There is no wrench on this connection and there should never be one. The threads are molded plastic, and overtightening either cracks the end cap outright or seizes the cartridge so thoroughly that the next person to change it has to destroy it to get it out. Snug, then stop.
